Thanks for coming. My name is Bryce, and I’m an otolaryngologist. My family is about to make a big change. In the Fall of 2022 we are moving to Kijabe, Kenya as part of the Post Residency Program through Samaritan’s Purse. We’ll keep you updated about everything that’s happening on our journey through posts on this site and on our YouTube channel. We’ll also send out a quarterly newsletter, which you can sign up for here.
We have been working towards this for a long time, but things officially started in June of 2021 when we were accepted into the post-residency-program. I had first heard of this during the Global Health Missions Conference in Louisville, KY. Since I went to medical school nearby in Lexington, our CMDA student group was able to attend the conference each year. We’ll talk more about GMHC in another blog. We have an orientation through Samaritan’s Purse in August 2022, after which we will move to Kenya. The PRP is designed to take physicians right out of residency and get them on the mission field. Missionary sending organizations realized that the longer doctors stay in America after training, the harder it is to get them to leave. Even so, its also very hard to make the giant transformation from resident to only surgeon within 100 miles in a foreign country. The PRP sets us up for success by ensuring our hospitals have mentors in our specialty to help us transition. They also provide logistical support for moving our families overseas, getting work visas, malpractice insurance, and things like that. The program lasts for 2 years, and then we will transition to a long term sending agency. After that, we could return to Kijabe, move to a different mission hospital, or transition our ministry stateside.
We are currently living in Lima, Ohio, where I’m working and studying for board exams. Mary Beth is keeping up with the kids, including our newborn Grace. We are both excited and nervous about the coming transition. We hope that you will be an active part of our support group as we share this journey with you.
To God be the Glory
-Bryce

- Giving Hope Through Jaw Reconstruction: Treating Ameloblastoma in KenyaAmeloblastomas are benign but locally aggressive tumors that most often arise in the mandible (lower jaw). While they grow slowly, patients in Kenya frequently present with very large masses by the time they come for treatment — far larger than any I encountered during my surgical training in the United States. Once these tumors reachContinue reading “Giving Hope Through Jaw Reconstruction: Treating Ameloblastoma in Kenya”
