Maasai Mara

The Byrds came for a visit, so we drove down to the Maasai Mara. This Kenyan national reserve is continuous with the Serengeti in Tanzania, and is the largest and best wildlife reserve on the continent. We are lucky that it is only a four hour drive from Kijabe. The Maasai people are very proud of the heritage, and work hard to preserve their roots, maybe more so than any other tribe in Kenya. While I do wish they would embrace some modern cultural concepts like sending kids to school and signing up for health insurance, their pastoral/nomadic lifestyle is special. We stayed inside the reserve in a lodge run by the Maasai people. You can see Uncle John get recruited to join a traditional dance in the video. Enjoy!
