Landslide Update

Kijabe received 2.5 inches of rain last night, which has continued to fill the ravines uphill from the railroad tracks. Efforts to pump out the water have been hampered by the unstable ground- the teams were not able to reach the ravines this morning to continue. More landslides are expected, and people are being asked to evacuate in the villages just to the north of Kijabe, and at the base of the mountain.

Road crews were busy all weekend keeping the main road from Kijabe to the highway open. The boys and I went on a walk through the rain to explore the fresh mudslides Saturday afternoon. The upper fence at RVA was knocked over, and a tree had fallen on a power line near the top of campus. The upper sports field was partially covered in the mudslide. The boys enjoyed sinking their boots in the mud, but it was sad to see the usually immaculate field ruined.

At church Sunday morning, we had a special prayer session for all the victims and the ongoing crisis in our area and Kenya as a whole. The key verse from the sermon is below. It seems the author was familiar with landslides.

God is our refuge and
strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth
give way and
the mountains fall
into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and
the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place
where the Most High
dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalms 46:1-7

The sun in peaking through the clouds at the moment, so hopefully the road crews are taking advantage of the momentary dry before the rains start again this evening. We just got word that the waterline to the hospital was reconnected, so some progress was made today.

Thank you for praying with us! Despite all the suffering around us, it is clear that God is still here, strengthening his people and creating beauty in the storm.
