Stories from the Road: AIC-CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya

The bulletin is a news publication by the American Academy of Otolaryngology. It’s cool to see our national academy taking an interest in the work at Kijabe. I was able to work with Dr. Belcher and the team when they visited last year.

Since the team’s last visit, the Kijabe Plastic surgery training program has stepped into the role, performing the surgeries on a weekly basis instead of big camps three times a year. The goal of trips like Dr. Belcher’s is to build the local surgical capacity and skill so that the trips are no longer needed, but it’s pretty rare that the goal is actually met. The last trip was bittersweet, but also exciting to see the reins being handed over. I’m sure the next hospital where they choose to work will be glad to have them.
